Daniel Erickson kept out of trouble to add to his British Formula Ford Championship points tally in a chaotic 18th round at Silverstone today. While several frontrunners crashed out of contention, Daniel avoided the carnage to finish sixth - his third top 10 result for the meeting.
Yesterday he qualified on pole position and finished fifth in Round 16, and this morning he scraped home in second place by less than 0.1s in round 17.
"It was a hectic race, to say the least," Daniel said afterwards. "On the second lap, Josef Newgarden spun and then Garry Findlay ran into him - cars were going everywhere!"
The Australian Motor Sport Foundation International Rising Star had problems of his own early in the race, when a set-up alteration to his Australian-built Spectrum 011c didn't quite go according to plan.
"We made a change that we thought would make the car faster at the beginning of the race, but it actually went faster towards the end!" Daniel said.
His weekend tally of 66 points - outscoring all but championship leader James Cole and pointscore midfielder Patrick McKenna - moved him closer to the next few rungs on the British Formula Ford Championship ladder. He is now 11, 20, 19 and 9 points closer to Chrissy Palmer (5th), Daniel Cammish (4th), Findlay (3rd) and Newgarden (2nd) respectively.
Daniel has test sessions scheduled at the Brands Hatch 'Indy' circuit this Tuesday (August 18) and Castle Combe on August 28, before the championship resumes with three rounds at Brands Hatch 'Indy' on September 5-6.
