In a nailbiting finish, Daniel Erickson finished an excellent second in Round 17 of the British Formula Ford Championship at Silverstone this morning (UK time).
Driving an Australian-built Spectrum 011c, Daniel held a tenuous second place for most of the 13-lap, 47km race around Silverstone's 'International' layout. That became third when American Josef Newgarden, racing on fresher tyres following his early Round 16 departure, went past on lap seven. Then third became second again two laps later, when erstwhile race leader and Saturday Round 16 winner Chrissy Palmer suddenly dropped down the race order with engine problems.
For the remaining three laps Daniel had his work cut out fending off Irishman Patrick McKenna and Britons Garry Findlay and James Cole. The CAMS International Rising Star hung onto second, just over three seconds behind the uncatchable Newgarden. In a blanket finish, McKenna was alongside Daniel - the official margin was just 0.046s! - with Findlay and championship pointscore leader Cole shadowing the #12 Kevin Mills Racing Spectrum over the line.
Today's result follows Daniel's fifth placing from pole position in Saturday's incident-packed Round 16.
